Three years ago, the beard came off again... but while Stu was doing chemo for metastatic prostate cancer. Not all of his hair went away - some remained on top of his head - but the beard, moustache, and eyebrows all went away while he was doing the heavy-duty chemo. The chemo beat back the cancer load, but the cancer is in his bones and, given current treatments, is unlikely to ever completely go away.
Not that long ago, the one-year survival rate for Stu's diagnosis (advanced prostate cancer) was 50%; the five-year survival rate was about 2%. Research into prostate cancer treatments, as well as promotion of cancer screenings, has improved these figures, but there is still a long way to go.
Since 2017, I've been doing fundraising for the Movember Foundation, which supports programs for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental health needs. I donated to other friends' fundraisers in past years, but now I'm doing my own.
I can't grow a moustache (yet... give me 10 years), and while the beard has come back some for Stu, his moustache is barely there. So no, we're not growing moustaches for the fundraiser -- just asking you to please donate to the Movember Foundation.
